If you regularly tune into The View, you probably know that it is usually an hour of heated debate with four hosts ranging from highly conservative to unapologetically liberal. This week, things took a remarkable twist when three of the four hosts actually agreed that women should have the right to own guns. Sherri Shepherd, Juliet Huddy, and Jenny McCarthy all favored keeping a gun in their homes while Lara Spencer disagreed.
The segment started by showing a new gun control ad that was intended to spark anti-gun sentiments. Instead, it had the opposite effect when the ladies started to dish about the real world implications of firearms. Sherri Shepherd was the first to share her point of view and she told the story of when an intruder broke into her home, which she shares with her young son. “The flipside is when I was at my home and the alarm went off, and I ran to my son’s bedroom and Jeffrey was crying. And I realized all I had to protect me and somebody coming around that corner was a daggone wicker trash basket.”
She talked about how people commonly say to use a bat or grab some pepper spray. But she says that it wouldn’t be hard for a larger, stronger intruder to knock the bat out of her nervous hands. She wouldn’t want to be close enough to the intruder to use pepper spray. “So when you’re standing there, and you don’t know how to protect your child? Get a gun in your home!” she said.
Next, Huddy recounted a time when a stalker was giving her problems. “I remember feeling so vulnerable. And I just remember constantly going to sleep at night wishing that I could go over and grab my dad’s gun.” McCarthy had also been in a situation that changed her view on gun control. “I’ve been in circumstances like Sherri where, you know people tried to break in and I’m with my son going, I wish I had something to protect myself with,” she said.
Spencer argued that having guns in the same house with children could be dangerous, but Shepherd and McCarthy both admitted to owning firearms and talked about the appropriate ways to store a gun inside the home. “Locked up, go to the gun range, know how to use it,” Shepherd said.
Are you surprised that the normally liberal hosts on The View were so unapologetically in favor of owning guns for home defense?
