Last week, President Obama went on a major rant about guns. His remarks were delivered at a town hall meeting at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Obama is making it clear that he thinks our biggest issue as a nation is gun violence and he is on a war path to make sure gun control comes out a victor before his time in office is done. Take a look at a few of the things he had to say lately:
“What we also have to recognize is, is that our homicide rates are so much higher than other industrialized countries. I mean by like a mile. And most of that is attributable to the easy, ready availability of firearms, particularly handguns.”
“And as long as you can go into some neighborhoods and it is easier for you to buy a firearm than it is for you to buy a book, there are neighborhoods where it’s easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable — as long as that’s the case, we’re going to continue to see unnecessary violence.”
“People just say well, we should have firearms in kindergarten and we should have machine guns in bars. You think I’m exaggerating — I mean, you look at some of these laws that come up.”
In order to fully appreciate these outlandish remarks you must first break them down one by one. So the first area that needs to be looked at further would be the claim that we, the United States, have the highest murder rate “by a mile”.
Among the industrialized countries in the world there are 34. Based on the information provided through OECD, the highest murder rate is Brazil, with a 25.5% rate. The United States is tied for fourth with a 5.2% Sure, the rate is higher than average but it is certainly not the highest.
The President also made the absurd claim that it is easier to buy clips and guns than it is fresh vegetables. While it is certainly clear that certain areas in the United States have a harder time finding fresh produce, the idea that you would need a background check for a bag of veggies is ludicrous. You know, since you have to have a background check to buy handguns.
Obviously the President has an agenda here and obviously he is hoping to sway public opinion. However the most interesting facts are the ones that the media will not report. The President is entering his lame duck season. The run up to a newly elected President always renders the current president somewhat impotent.
President Obama is attempting to write legislation in the public realm and he is trying to do so because he has no chance of actually passing any meaningful legislation through a Republican held congress. These claims against guns are baseless and they have no place in the public discourse. In all honesty, honesty is not all that common among the political elite when it comes to pushing an agenda. Regardless of their affiliation.
