.17 Ammunition

The .17 is a classic subcaliber that first appeared in the United States in the 1920’s. The .17 was born when an Oregon man began making one of a kind 17 caliber cases using large screws fashioned from wood and brass. Twenty years later, Charles O’Neil created the first 17 caliber rifle and cartridge. This was the beginning of a legendary line of 17 caliber wildcats that were developed after the end of World War II. Eventually, P.O. Ackley decided to take O’Neil’s rifle design and use it as an inspiration for the 17 Peewee. The .17 bullets were made mostly from copper wire and featured a hollow point tip. Despite their crude design, they were quite accurate for hunting small game.
