The .40 Smith and Wesson is a rimless pistol cartridge developed as a collaborative effort by Smith and Wesson and Winchester in 1990. It was made for use by law enforcement officers with hopes to mimic the 10 mm automatic cartridges used by the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Originally, the .40 S&W was paired with the Model 4006 pistol, but the Glock 22 and Glock 23 also work with this caliber.
