Also known as: 280 remington, 280 Remington, 280 Remington Ackley Improved, .280 Ackley, .280 Remington, .280 Ackley Improved, 280 rem
The .280 Remington was created in 1957 for use in the 700 rifle series. The design roots back to the .30-06 Springfield, which was necked down to work with 7mm bullets. The neck was also moved forward just slightly. Remington released the .280 about 32 years after Winchester offered the .270 and as such, the initial sales were not impressive. However, Remington rebranded this cartridge in 1979 and called it the 7mm Express. While the move was meant to increase sales, it only caused confusion as people were frequently mixing up the 7mm Express with the 7 mm Rem Magnum. In the early 1980’s the name was changed back to .280.
