Also known as: 30-06 springfield, 30-06, .30-06, .30-06 Springfield, .30-06 Springfield (M-1 Garand), .30-06 M1
Springfield introduced the 30-06 to the US Army in 1906. It was later standardized and continued use by military personnel until the 1970’s. This design replaced the earlier 6 mm Lee Navy, .30-03, and .30-40 Krag. This cartridge was highly effective and the US Army used it as the primary choice for rifles and machine guns for half a century. It was later replaced by the .308 Winchester and the 5.56x45mm NATO that are still in use today. While the military has retired the .30-06 Springfield, it is still extremely popular as a sporting round for commercial use.
