.378 Weatherby Magnum Ammunition

Also known as: 378 Weatherby Magnum, .378 Weatherby

The .378 Weatherby Magnum was released in 1953 as an original belted magnum design without a parent case. It was inspired by the .416 Rigby and the .373 H&H. Federal developed the 215 Magnum rifle primer just for use with this round. After Weatherby released the .375, there was some disappointment with its performance so he they went on to release the 378 Magnum. To draw notability, Roy Weatherby used this cartridge to kill an African elephant in one shot during a safari. This is still considered a Safari worthy cartridge and can take on all African game including hippopotamus, crocodiles, and antelope. It is sometimes used in North America for elk, brown bears, or polar bears.
